After experiencing a hemorrhagic brainstem stroke at the age of 29, someone once asked me, "Don't you feel robbed of your life?"

To frame my journey solely as a theft of life is to overlook the profound transformations and insights it has afforded me. How could I be robbed of something I never had? I had thoughts of how I envisioned my future, but I can't be robbed of that vision. It just means there is a different path for me than I envisioned, which could lead to the same result or something even greater and beyond my imagination.

I've discovered an inner strength and resilience I never knew I possessed. The stroke forced me to confront my vulnerabilities, to be raw and honest not just with myself, but with others. This vulnerability has become a powerful tool in connecting with people, fostering a sense of community and support. I’ve been able to spark conversations that bring awareness to stroke and brain injury, empowering others to share their stories and creating a network of mutual understanding and encouragement.

My life’s purpose has evolved. I am now an advocate for rare disease, cavernous malformation, brain injury awareness and resilience, using my platform to ensure that my community is seen, heard, and loved. This new direction has given my life a profound sense of meaning and fulfilment. Every story shared, every life touched, reaffirms that while my path may be different from what I envisioned, it is no less valuable or impactful.

So, do I feel robbed of my life? No. I feel that my life has been transformed. It has taken on a new, richer dimension—one that is defined by perseverance, advocacy, and an unwavering commitment to helping others navigate their own challenges. This journey, though arduous, has gifted me with a deeper appreciation for life’s fragility and resilience, teaching me to cherish every moment and to find strength in vulnerability.
